- Let me establish something. I'm an American. I'm also a graduate student
- in mathematics, and in all standardized tests (IQ, SAT, GRE) have scored well
- above the norm. I am not "dumb." I am probably smarter than you.
- And yet, to your great shock, I also consistently sink my money into
- Amigas and Amiga equipment. The question, then, is why I do such a thing.
- Well, there are several reasons:
-
- (1) I genuinely enjoy the operating system. I rarely have problems with the
- way it works. It is elegant and efficient. Furthermore, there are lots of
- PD/freeware "extensions" to it that are easily integrated into the Workbench
- environment.
-
- (2) I have an intense dislike and disrespect of Microsoft and Bill Gates. I
- won't support that company and its business practices and software hacks. Nor
- will I buy a product that directly supports MS's dominance of the software/OS
- market (ie games that are designed for MS-DOS, Windows(95)). (All right,
- I recently broke this vow to buy DOS 6.22 for the bridgeboard I purchased
- because no version of DOS was included with it).
-
- (3) I refuse to let money and the concern for it control my decisions about
- what company and software practices to support. I buy what I _like_ (in
- general: the above puchase was an exception).
-
- (4) I do have SVGA. I am currently running in 1024x768 on both my Workbench
- screen and Term screen. Sure I have a card that gives me these resolutions,
- but last I checked so do Intel boxes.
-
- (5) I run DOS and Mac systems both while multitasking with AmigaOS. I can
- also run NetBSD if I so desire. And as someone else has pointed out, there
- _are_ Internet solutions for the Amiga, and more on the way.
-
- So while you "get with the program" and mindlessly follow instruction after
- instruction handed down by your CPU (mass media advertising and popular
- culture), I'll just continue doing my own thing.
